Coral Reef Institute –
Mission
We focus on
rigorous Science to educate the public
& advocate policymakers to achieve conservation,
protection and restoration of coral reefs.
To implement
this new vision, Coral Reef Institute developed objectives and
strategies to meet the following goals:
*Increase public awareness of the
importance and value of living coral reef
ecosystems.
*Increase scientific understanding and knowledge of living coral reef
ecosystems.
*Design develop and help implement strategies for marine protected areas
associated with coral reef ecosystems.
*Encourage and support eco-tourism as part of sustainable community
development that protects and preserves coral reef
ecosystems.
*Strengthen Coral reef
institute's organizational ability to carry out its new missions.
The mission of Coral Reef
Institute is non-invasive monitoring and assessment of the coral reef
ecosystem in our study area. We create educational programs for public
interest to instill an ethic of ocean conservation. We take photographs
and provide educational materials (translated into Thai language) into
the classrooms on Phuket Island. Our mission is to increase the
understanding of the importance of coral reefs and the ocean ecosystem.
Coral Reef Institute has a training program for university students to
train students to be environmentally sensitive, proficient divers,
actively involved in ocean and coral reef ecosystems.
Coral Reef Institute – Goals
The primary goal and
objective of Coral Reef Institute is assessment, monitoring and
restoration of the coral reef ecosystem along the Thailand – Andaman Sea
region. Coral Reef Institute assesses, documents, and monitors
biodiversity levels of ecologically significant reef organisms.
Stimulate local community
action to protect remaining coral reefs and rehabilitate damaged reefs.
Provide educational
lectures and materials to local schools to increase environmental
awareness.
Encourage and support
environmental projects in the Thai-Andaman Sea region.
Promote environmentally
sensitive and proficient diver training for all levels from beginner to
advanced levels. Our training programs are geared to a university or
college level and may be eligible for college credits for students.
CRI networks with local,
national, and international environmental organizations. The knowledge
derived from coral reef assessments is shared with international
scientists and conservation organizations.
Offer recommendations to
and advise local governmental organizations regarding coral reef
management and public policy issues.
